SWE Strategic Plan Fiscal Years 1999-2003

There is an urgent need for engineers and other technical professionals to support the nation’s growing technological demands. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) provides active, imaginative and effective programs and partnerships for the career development of women engineers. SWE also encourages the pursuit of technical education and career skills. The Mission, Objectives and Strategic Priorities described herein provide the framework for Society projects, programs and partnerships, while the Values section describes the guidelines for the conduct and behavior of the Society’s members.
 Strategic Priorities: Leadership
Provide opportunities for
members to develop and
demonstrate their leadership
and management skills.
  • Ensure that opportunities for the development of leadership skills are offered to our membership in the form of team building, project management, mentoring and facilitating. 
  • Offer opportunities to develop administrative and technical management skills. 
  • Increase the capability of members to share vision, define strategies, delegate tactics and measure success. 
  • Provide guidance for career advancement. 

Strategic Priorities: Diversity

Promote inclusion of women with diverse backgrounds in the Society and the engineering community.
  • Develop and adopt principles that establish specific commitments to diversity and provide guidance for SWE policies, statements and activities. 
  • Develop and implement a Society diversity plan. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with other professional organizations that speak for underrepresented groups. 
  • Expand initiatives to recognize and address work/life issues.

Strategic Priorities: Education

Provide programs that encourage girls and women to study engineering and encourage members to attain high levels of technical achievement.
  • Provide outreach programs and activities to inform women, girls, parents and the community of the career opportunities available in engineering. 
  • Support girls and women interested in pursuing a career in engineering. 
  • Provide a forum for members to further develop their technical communications skills. 

Strategic Priorities: Visibility

Increase visibility of women engineers, the Society and the engineering profession.
  • Promote SWE to corporations, academia, government, the community and other professional organizations. 
  • Strengthen internal communications to facilitate external visibility. 
  • Strengthen the SWE magazine so that it serves as a primary voice for women in engineering. 
  • Establish international presence and connections. 

Strategic Priorities: Vitality

Enhance the services and operations of the Society and its programs at all levels.
  • Increase membership and volunteer participation through recruitment, retention, international outreach, and enhanced member services. 
  • Implement long-term fund development plan to provide an endowed and funded base for programs and operations of  the Society. 
  • Strengthen relationships with corporate partners and increase their involvement. 
  • Identify and improve the advertisement and revenue generating potential of SWE products. 
  • Improve and increase staff capabilities to better address Society needs.
