The Office of Research Administration is pleased to offer four internal competitions for Wichita State faculty:
1. AWARD FOR RESEARCH/CREATIVE PROJECTS IN SUMMER (ARCS)
GENERAL: ARCS provide a stipend of $3,000 for 2 months to enable faculty to pursue research or creative projects during the summer and up to $1,000 for other operating expenses. Awardees are expected to resume their teaching duties at WSU in the fall for the next academic year. Proposals are reviewed by the Senate Faculty Support Committee. Requests for exceptions to grant terms and conditions may be considered.
ELIGIBILITY: Full time current tenured and probationary faculty holding no more than a 10-month appointment [with no teaching or any other concurrent appointment or employment at WSU or elsewhere for 2 months) are eligible. Endowed/distinguished professors are ineligible as are temporary and visiting faculty. Those who accept a summer award from their college (for that summer) are also ineligible. A faculty member may receive only one of the following in a fiscal year: an ARCS, a University Research/Creative Projects Award (URCA), a Multidisciplinary Research Project Award (MURPA) or a University LINK Award (ULINK). Faculty receiving ARCS awards are ineligible in this competition for the following three years.
DEADLINE: The deadline for a completed, fully signed application in the Office of Research Administration (ORA) is November 14, 2008.
2. UNIVERSITY RESEARCH/CREATIVE PROJECTS AWARD (URCA)
GENERAL: URCAs are grants of up to $4,500 awarded in two separate competitions: (i) for tenure-eligible faculty in their first or second year of probation to initiate research/creative projects, and (ii) for tenured faculty or probationary faculty in their 3rd (or more) year of probation, e.g., to retool or reestablish a productive research/creative projects agenda. In areas where external funding is available, the URCA may be used as seed money to develop pilot data. Areas where access to external sources is limited may receive special consideration. Proposals are reviewed by the Senate Faculty Support Committee. Requests for exceptions to grant terms and conditions may be considered.
ELIGIBILITY: Full time current tenured and probationary faculty members of WSU are eligible; distinguished and endowed professors, as well as temporary and visiting faculty, are ineligible. A faculty member may receive only one of the following in a fiscal year: an URCA, an Award for Research/Creative Projects in Summer (ARCS), a Multidisciplinary Research Project Award (MURPA), or a University LINK Award (ULINK). Faculty receiving URCA awards are ineligible in this competition for the following three years.
DEADLINE: For both categories is December 12, 2008.
3. MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH PROJECT AWARD (MURPA)
DEFINITION: Multidisciplinary research projects are defined as those that involve two or more investigators from different disciplines that focus different perspectives and capabilities on complex problems that intersect established areas of study.
GENERAL: Two awards for multidisciplinary research projects may be made, for up to $5,000 each. They are intended as seed money to develop pilot data for proposals to be submitted to governmental agencies, foundations, or industries. Funds are restricted to WSU faculty project expenses. Awards may be requested for either Spring (January 1 - June 30) or Summer. Proposals are reviewed by the Senate Faculty Support Committee. Requests for exceptions to grant terms and conditions may be considered.
ELIGIBILITY: Full time current probationary and tenured faculty members are eligible; those who request summer funding may hold no more than a 10-month appointment and have no teaching or other concurrent appointment or employment at WSU or elsewhere during two summer months. Awardees are expected to resume their appointments at WSU in the fall for the next academic year. Endowed/ distinguished professors are ineligible as are temporary and visiting faculty. Those who accept a Summer award from their college are also ineligible. A faculty member may receive only one of the following in a fiscal year: a MURPA, a University Research/Creative Projects Award (URCA); an Award for Research/Creative projects in Summer (ARCS); or a University LINK Award (ULINK). Faculty receiving a MURPA award are ineligible in this competition for the following three years.
DEADLINE: The deadline for a completed, fully signed application in the Office of Research Administration (ORA), for either Spring or Summer, is October 8, 2008.
4. UNIVERSITY LINK AWARD (ULINK)
GENERAL: WSU-LINK and the Office of Research Administration are pleased to offer seed grants for joint WSU-Community research/training/service projects. Four awards of $2,500 each will be offered for WSU-Community based research, service learning, and/or curriculum development projects. A further $500 match is required from each applicant’s academic department, college or community partner(s). The funded projects must include the involvement of a community partner. These grants are intended to support the development of projects that might qualify eventually for funding from government agencies, foundations, or industry. Topics for proposals should fall into the following categories:
For example, aging, nutrition, literacy, violence prevention, etc.
For example, workforce development, training, etc.
For example, school preparedness, truancy, at-risk kids, etc.
For example, musical performance or training for children, lecture series, etc.
The awards will be made for work completed between May 1 and December 31. The proposals will be evaluated by a committee appointed by the WSU-LINK advisory board, which consists of both WSU faculty members and community partners.
