Mayan Villages

We start our ethnographic journey with a two-day stay among the Mopan Maya deep in the Maya Mountains.   We participate in the TOLEDO ECO-TOURISM ASSOCIATION plan to encourage tourists to visit the ethnic villages in the Toledo district and to provide villagers with a means to supplement their cash income.

We will eat our meals in individual Mayan homes where kitchen floors and

hearths are often made of hard-packed clay.

We stay in a guest house with simple bunk beds.

Bathing is done by taking "dip baths" (we will show you how)

and there are concrete based toilets.

While we are there, we will learn how the Maya make a living, learn how to make tortillas,

have the opportunity to hike to the rain forest, and receive other cultural information.
