Garifuna in Barranco

Located almost to the southern border of Belize, Barranco is a Garifuna community.  The Garifuna, or Garinagu, originated from African survivors of Spanish and British slave ships shipwrecked near the island of St. Vincent.  The Garifuna speak a Native American language and maintain a distinct culture.

Our stay in Barranco may include a history of the Garifuna, a tour of the mangroves, a tour of the

gardens, and a village tour including  seeing the dabuyaba, a temple where the ritual dugu is conducted to request the assistance of ancestor spirits.
