Budget considerations for summer pay on ARCS and MURPA grants

All budget items are subject to state and WSU regulations.  One month’s summer salary or stipend pay is limited to 1/9 of an academic year’s salary.  In addition to the regular payroll deductions for state and federal taxes, social security, retirement contributions, etc., the grant must also pay the employer’s side of these benefits which can range from 24% to 30% of the month’s pay (http://www.niar.twsu.edu/ORAweb/Rate_sheet.htm).

If your proposal involves travel and other expenses, you will gain more actual dollars to spend on your project if you budget them as such and not as salary.

(note:  the pdf files are interactive:  place hand tool in form and click to change to I-bar for typing; click on boxes to mark when cursor becomes a pointing finger; to make selection in list boxes: click on box, use arrows to scroll to choice; click in box when choice appears.  Lines for applicant and chair are for real signatures.)

NIH PHS 398 forms are available as Microsoft Word rich text format forms.  Because the footers are different for the different sections of the application, it is often easier to fill out the forms one by one, rather than trying to keep the application as a single file.  Remember to read the instructions.  Be aware that NIH is migrating to electronic submissions through grants.gov.
